FoxFire in downtown Geneva will mark a milestone in November, celebrating its 15-year anniversary. Considering the volatile nature of the restaurant business, that qualifies as a genuine success story.
The family-run enterprise, founded by Curt Gulbro, is now in the capable hands of son and chef-owner K.C. Gulbro.
Diners continue to respond favorably to the "fine casual" atmosphere and to the kitchen’s contemporary American fare.
FoxFire is housed in a historic building that dates back to the 1920s. It’s a charming space with original exposed brick and rustic beams. Seating capacity approaches 200 diners — more when the seasonal patio is up and running.
Steak, chops and seafood are prominent on the wide-ranging menu. Steak frîtes, filet mignon, New York strip and steak Diane are among the preparations available. The 14-oz. rib-eye ($35) is especially in demand. So is the Seafood Arrabbita.
A recent meal at FoxFire began with a shared order of lightly fried Asian tube calamari served with green onions, sweet chili sauce and a drizzle of hoisin. This agreeable starter is available on both the lunch and dinner menus. Warm, freshly baked dinner rolls provided a nice touch.
Shrimp de Jonghe, Sesame Tuna and Prime Rib Bruschetta are among other appetizer options.
Lobster Mac’n Cheese exceeded expectations. The indulgent dish starred lobster tail meat, Pecorino Romano, cheddar, Gruyère and roasted corn. It was served over trottole pasta shaped to resemble spinning tops. Given the large serving, a portion of leftovers made a perfect lunch the next day.
A dining partner delighted in her Walleye Pike entrée. The perfectly executed dish featured white wine sauce, capers, shallots, roasted fingerling potatoes and grilled asparagus.
Dessert lovers will enjoy FoxFire’s Almond Cream Cake, a tasty riff on tiramisu. The creamy confection draws flavors from Amaretto and toasted almonds.
FoxFire offers a full-service bar, from aperitifs to after-dinner cocktails. It keeps six beers on tap. There’s seasonal rotation, but Guinness and Stella Artois are always available. Recently featured were a Belgian IPA-style beer from Penrose Brewing in Geneva. Also representedare Two Brothers Brewing in Warrenville and Chicago-based Revolution Brewing. A number of craft and mainstream beers are sold by the bottle.
The wine cellar stocks about 100 wines — about half of which are available by the glass.
Live entertainment is offered every Friday night, varying from jazz, to classic rock, to country.
FoxFire is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, with special menu items on offer Monday to Friday.
